JONATHAN NOTARIO ” REALITY TOYS”
Blanca Soto Arte presents the first individual work by the artist Jonathan Notario (León, 1981) titled Reality Toys, a project started in 2009 based on the creation of his own imaginary of products that solve problems or treat different matters related to the human being. Reality Toys is conceived as a compendium of packaged objects, their instruction manuals and their advertising campaigns, which make up a whole universe of pseudo-functional toys .
Reality Toys is a fictional brand of toys that help solve human problems through the absurd intervention of technology. A project that focuses on "ideas" as "autonomous mental products" to resolve conflicts and the way in which this immaterial phenomenon becomes physical through work_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b -136bad5cf58d_ manual.
Each piece of the project has its origin in a reflection of the author. The game makes it possible to unleash everything that reality does not allow, for this reason his work is based on the creation of toys with which he solves problems and analyzes the world. In this way, his own status as an artist becomes a game too:
“I am an individual who plays at being an artist who plays at being an inventor who plays at being an entrepreneur”
Formally, Reality Toys is presented as a hybrid between painting, sculpture, graphic design, comics, performance…. The works are packagings made by hand, on canvas that is later covered with plastic, transforming it into a non-industrial kiosk blister.
These packages contain miraculous toys that either solve problems, sometimes related to the difficulties of young artists (workerman: the doll that replaces you at work, la Máquina_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b -136bad5cf58d_artist, Mini anti-discussion bomb, Collection of weapons to defend yourself in English) or simply deal with various topics in a tangential way (spray beard, eat the cooks… ). Jonathan Notario's concern for the way in which the viewer relates to the works becomes the importance of the instruction manual, which explains how each product should be used and which he conceives as a piece in itself . Along with the products and manuals, there is also a series of hand-painted billboards on the toys he has built. Toys that are the instrument to create an imaginary utopia, a universe filled with miraculous objects that make the dreams of individuals come true. This hope is transmitted through these advertisements of the brand, claims that refer to past times when the world was simpler and more naive.
