RUBEN FERNANDEZ CASTON
Merida 1981.
He studied engraving and design at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Seville. Throughout his career he has developed a type of art based on observation and experimentation, thus granting a scientific methodology to his creative process, geometry being its fundamental axis.
In his work he does not seek criticism, denounce or capture the reality of the world that surrounds us...
The angles, the planes, etc., are essential elements of measurement in the creation of the supports. From the copy of the simplest geometry I move to its analysis. It is about skillfully creating a support (frame or irregular wooden frame) and a geometric work, always keeping in mind the color and the final context. In the execution of each work, an exploration is directly set up, everything being reduced to the immediacy of the support, greatly aided by its irregularity, the invisibility of the brushstrokes, the flat stain and the repetition of identical stripes.
Geometry is the basis of his works, but we cannot therefore consider that they can be monotonous. This artist studies the multiple possibilities of his relationship with color, support, with chromatic consistency or with the characteristics of the space where his works are displayed. In addition to modifying the perception of his works, turning them into potential paintings/sculptures or installations, the space where they are exhibited can introduce a certain scenographic element into them. It is essential for the artist that the work itself, once finished and exhibited, play with each other, forming a scenic visual composition, following a rhythm or composition.
