RICARDO ALCAIDE
(1975, Valencia)
A Place to Hide
The centre of Ricardo Alcaide’s practice is a photographic subject, but one which is not limited to two dimensions. His projects engage both poetically and politically within a discourse of multicultural exchange. How do people in different environments cope with economic and social exclusion? A Place To Hide is one of Alcaide’s most recent projects, where themes of concealment and disappearance are central to his work.
From a series of photographs of refuge architecture in the tradition of Walker Evans, the artist extends his dialogue, taking the subjects out of their context and relating them to the imaginative and psychological dimensions of urban space.
The project combines different medias, predominantly photography and painting, and including Formica, sculpture and video. The viewer will be invited to relate differently to issues of refuge and concealment through the aesthetic of the discourse.
